March at Nomos
The autumn weather is slowly creeping in all around us, but the oncoming chill hasn’t slowed us down one bit! Here are the highlights of March at Nomos:
-
- March saw more Partner, TSS (subclass 482) and ENS (subclass 186) visa grants for our clients along with Visitor and Resident Return visa grants. Lots of success stories and lots of happy clients!
-
- On 23 March 2024, the Student (subclass 500) visa program saw some major changes, the most notable of which was the removal of the ‘genuine temporary entrant’ criteria. Prospective Student visa applicants will no longer need to provide evidence that they plan to remain in Australia temporarily, with no Australian immigration plans beyond that. This change makes sense as it will more easily allow the Department to accurately assess which Student visa applicants genuinely intend to study in Australia, and which ones do not. Further, the new Migration (English Language Tests and Evidence Exemptions for Subclass 500 (Student) Visa) Instrument (LIN 24/022) was introduced, which outlines English language requirements for all Student visa applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024.

- Our Directors were met with a particularly full social calendar this month, with both Kathryn and Victoria attending the Law Society of New South Wales’ annual International Women’s Day breakfast, where many of the diverse women from the legal profession met and were able to hear Justice Dina Yehia share her positive message of inclusion within the profession. Further, the Law Council of Australia’s annual Immigration Law Conference was held in Melbourne in March, and included a range of notable speakers including The Hon. Minister Giles. Always a great occasion for the open exchange of ideas, the conference provided an opportunity for many lawyers to ask questions of the Minister concerning the current state of the immigration program and its future. Similarly, the annual Legalwise Immigration Law Summit 2024 also took place this month, giving us yet another opportunity to catch up on the latest news and exchange ideas for the future in the immigration space.
That’s the Nomos wrap-up for March. See you next month!
