January at Nomos
One month down for 2023 already! Here’s the Nomos snapshot of the opening month of the new year:
-
- After a well-earned break over the festive season, Nomos has hit the ground running in 2023 and we’ve started the year with Partner, employer sponsored and skilled visa grants. Even though we’re only just capping off the first month of the year, we’ve already seen an upswing in migration, particularly skilled migration and employer-sponsored migration. According to former Deputy Secretary of the Department of Immigration Abdul Rizvi (as published here), Australia is on track to surge beyond the Treasury’s prediction of 235,00 new arrivals in 2023 by about 25%. The figure reached by the Treasury in October 2022 was based on an assumption of returning to pre-pandemic levels. According to data provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in December 2022, the number of arrivals to Australia overshadowed the number of departures (in October 2022) by almost 200,000. Only time will tell as to which prediction (if either) ends up being correct.
-
- In case you missed it, the Department of Home Affairs announced last December that they would be prioritising processing of lodged sc189 Skilled Independent visas in the New Zealand stream, and that they would also introduce an expedited pathway to citizenship for some of this cohort. We were pleased to start the year with a bank for all our clients who had applied for this visa, with many of them now in the process for applying for Australian citizenship.
-
- On 22 January, we welcomed in the Year of the Rabbit with the Lunar New Year celebrations. According to ancient Chinese tradition, the rabbit symbolises peace, prosperity and longevity – things we all need as we continue to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. In short, all our fingers and toes are crossed that 2023 is a year of hope and growth for everyone!
-
- As always, if you or someone you know could benefit from speaking to an expert about Australian or New Zealand migration pathways, please feel free to get in touch.
That’s the Nomos wrap-up for January. See you next month!
