November at Nomos
The second last month of 2019 has flown by! Here’s just a few of our November highlights:
- We started the month in London, at the 9th Biennial Global Immigration Conference presented by the International Bar Association’s Immigration and Nationality Law Committee. In addition to meeting a number of exceptional international practitioners, it was interesting to discover immigration programmes throughout the world mirror the issues we currently face in Australia. Strategic discussions about dealing with delays in processing, concerns about automated visa processing and the inability of immigration programmes to keep up with an increasingly global workforce were foremost on the agenda.
- Two particularly satisfying outcomes for Nomos clients this month: the first saw one of our clients succeeding in a request for Ministerial intervention and being granted a substituted 600 visa. The Minister’s choice to grant this visa means our client is no longer barred from making a further visa application onshore and now has the opportunity to pursue a pathway to permanent residence in Australia. The second saw two distraught parents urgently seeking our assistance after receiving a notice from the DHA advising their 9-month-old baby was unlawful. Simple steps had been missed in their visa application process, leaving the baby unlawful and the family facing separation to rectify the situation. Happily, the baby has now been granted a visa without the family having to be separated for even one day. Needless to say, the parents are enormously relieved.
- Kathryn took part in the inaugural Dr John Yu Fellowship, a three-day programme created by the University of Sydney to address the gap in leadership development for multicultural professionals. Nomos supports a number of causes that promote a more inclusive Australia, and we were thrilled Kathryn was selected to take part in this Fellowship.
That’s the Nomos wrap-up for November, and the last for 2019! Our last work day this year is Friday 20 December, we are closing for a well-earned break and will return to work on 6 January 2020. Team Nomos wishes you all a safe and happy festive season!
